Tony Jones sure nailed it (Over time unwelcome changes have been forced on society by self interested groups, May, The Independent Australian). So many problems have been caused by unfettered population growth.
And now the chickens are coming home to roost with climate change, water shortages, food insecurity, biodiversity loss and excess nitrogen poisoning our waters. We simply have to rein in population growth, everywhere. Japan is setting an excellent example by going into negative population growth. There are a quarter million fewer people a year and, while this causes some problems with ageing, the Japanese are employing robots to help care for the elderly, rather than importing ever more people. Hopefully in a few decades, Japan will get back to its ecological carrying capacity.
